Here come the girls (at The Brits 2022)
We love the Brits. And have been so excited to catch this years show, not least because it saw the return of a full audience and the big performance spectacle: there was pyrotechnics, aerial performers, dancers and full Gospel choirs - something we always get excited about here.
Also this year, gender based categories have been removed for the first time. And, OH MY GOSH, did the women represent!! Of the 14 categories televised, 10 awards went to the girls and they even won in categories where female artists went under-represented. And of course Adele won three awards! Saying “I love being a female artist” as she accepted the third.
The BRIT School tie in with this years sponsor (Mastercard), was so right. As was the amount of times people spoke about the next generation. This was backed up by performances and speeches to provide the youth coming through, in and outside of music with message of hope and aspiration. It was truly inspirational.
The award for the most inspirational speech (an award I just made up!) goes to Little Simz. She took her Mum up with her to collect the award and said “Look at what you done Mum” I’m not gonna lie - I cried in this moment. Probably because I feel very similar about my own Mum, so it resonated. In my tear ducts! She went on to speak about how she is an Independent artist from a council estate. “For all the kids; keep dreaming”. It’s so important to have young people talking like this in the public eye for the youth to look to as their role models. And to showcase what you can do as an independent artist. Little Simz is authentic, credible, humble and incredibly talented. For me, she had the performance of the night award too (another award I just made up!). I’m looking forward to her takeover this year.
See for yourself …
It was also great to see Ed Sheeran collect the award for Songwriter of the Year. Whatever your music taste, you cannot deny the genius of Ed. His ability to cross genres, catch our ears and collab with the brightest and the best. Vocally he gets better and better and is a shinning example of working on and subsequently knowing your craft. Plus he’s another one who manages to stay humble.
