Drop the Mic! is our FREE monthly open mic for young musicians. We welcome Singer/Songwriters, Musicians, Vocal Artists, Rappers, Bands and other music enthusiasts from Southend and the surrounding area’s to get involved and join the community. Events include the opportunity to take part in our open mic, meet others who share an interest in music and to meet music artists to pick up hints and tips about working in music.

After taking a short break for exam season we are back - NEXT EVENT: 28 June

at Leigh Folk Festival!

Scroll to find out more, including how to apply to play

This month we are going on the road, hosting the open mic at Leigh Folk Festival! The festival is where the Drop the Mic project was born, back in 2023.

Drop The Mic! we take place on the Library Stage located in Leigh Library Gardens, all day on Saturday 28th June from 11am.

Unlike our regular event, the stage will be purely acoustic, which means cajon and percussion, instead of a full kit and no backing tracks. We will still provide keys, mics and the PA and can supply instruments such as guitars and bass, for the event - simply let us know what you need when you complete the form, below.

The deadline to apply to play is: 31 May

We have popped together an apply to play process for this one so we can effectively curate the stage for a full day and ensure all performances compliment the festival, so please tell us much as possible about your performance.

After the application deadline, all submissions will be reviewed with the Drop the Mic! youth forum and we will be in touch with plans for the day.

We also want to hear from anyone interested in helping behind the scenes with event management, live sound and from those interested in hosting. And if you’re not playing but are interested in music, simply pop down and watch!

Please complete the following form to apply to play.

Drop the Question!

A regular feature at Drop the Mic! Drop the Question? was introduced after the Youth Forum identified a need to meet professional music artists to ask questions around their career journey, how they got into music, what a typical week looks like, plus hear other hints and tips about todays industry.

Below are the guests we have had to date:

Tom is an accomplished singer-songwriter and the frontman of the indie rock band The Trusted.

Song School Alumni Heidi is a singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, currently signed to 3BEAT (Universal)

Megan Rose is a singer/songwriter and actor who released her debut EP ‘Brave This’ in September 2018 reaching number 6 in the Apple Country Album Charts.
