Drop the Mic! Launches Paid Host Roles for Young Musicians (16+)
We’ve got big news from Drop the Mic! — for the first time, we’re introducing paid host roles for young musicians.
This is a real milestone for The Song School. Drop the Mic has always been about giving young people a welcoming, inclusive place to perform, connect and grow. Launching paid hosting opportunities is one more way we’re building real-world pathways into the creative industries - with clear expectations, professional support, and meaningful experience young people can take forward.
What is a Drop the Mic host?
Our hosts help the event run smoothly, supported by our experienced team. The role includes:
Welcoming the room and setting a positive, inclusive tone
Introducing performers clearly and respectfully
Helping manage transitions between acts (with support from the team)
Performing short, self-accompanied sets to open/close the event (and filling short gaps if needed)
It’s a practical, confidence-building role that develops communication, stagecraft, and professional reliability - all in a supportive environment.
Building skills for adult settings (and self-employment)
For many young people, the step from “I love music” to “I can do this in the real world” can feel huge. These paid host roles are designed to bridge that gap - offering supported, professional experience that helps young people:
Develop open mic hosting skills in a youth-centred space, readying them for more adult settings
Build confidence speaking to a room, reading the vibe, and keeping the energy flowing
Strengthen professional habits like reliability, preparation and punctuality
Perform self-accompanied material in a live setting
Just as importantly, this initiative supports self-employment skill development - helping young people understand the practical realities of freelance-style work in the creative industries, including communication, expectations, and (where appropriate) invoicing and admin.
It’s also a chance to build evidence for a CV or portfolio, and to learn what professional expectations look like in a friendly, youth-centred setting.
Connecting to our youth pathways
At The Song School, we’re committed to supporting young people not only to learn, but to progress.
Traditional routes into work and training don’t fit everyone - and in the creative industries, the path is rarely straightforward anyway. That’s why we’re building alternative pathways and transitions to industry support through opportunities like Drop the Mic, alongside our wider youth development work.
Our youth mentor pathway supports young people to move from participant, to mentor, to paid opportunities where appropriate - gaining experience, responsibility and confidence with the right support around them.
In the absence of a fit-for-purpose music apprenticeship programme, the work continues. We’re actively learning, building partnerships, and creating stepping stones that help young people move toward the futures they want.
Confirming hosts across the summer
Following a formal recruitment process, we’ll be confirming hosts ahead of each Drop the Mic event over the coming months.
We’re excited to introduce you to the young musicians stepping into these roles - and to keep growing what Drop the Mic can be: a place to perform, belong, and take real steps toward the music industry.
