Sound Waves celebrates the legacy of Southend's Music Scene
On a October afternoon during half-term, members of The Song School and those who took part in this years’ Sounds on Sea project, headed down to Chinnerys in Southend for an epic night of live music.
The Sounds on Sea Project, supported by Music-on-sea, Aspirations Southend, c2c Rail and Ewans Music , provided an opportunity for young people to take part in a music activity outside of school & enabled them to come together over the course of three phases, spanning much of 2024, for a uniquely creative experience, comprising creative research, songwriting, rehearsing, music performance, event management and technical skills such as live sound.
Participants worked collaboratively, building their creative musical skills through exploration of the theme of the cultural popular music heritage of Southend on sea. Via the theme, young people explored the music artists’, bands, genres, culture, fashion, venues and the night time economy.
At the gig, named Sound Waves, participants performed their new original works, created during the project, alongside headline acts that also featured well-established home grown talent including Heidi and David Woodcock and the Fixtures.
Of the initiative, owner of Chinnerys, Glyn Morgan says; "It was an absolute pleasure to host The Song school event, it was great to see the next generation of musicians performing so well together. Without them, the future of British music will be in doubt, keep up the great work."
